2006 Callers Convention Minutes and Reports
Board
Of Directors Meeting
Holiday Inn Express, Jamestown, ND
October 28, 2006 - 3:00PM
Allan
Currie, President called the meeting to order at 3:00PM.
Roll Call was taken by the secretary. All members were present
except Treasurers Clayton and Gloria Brennan, Historian
Tammie Hughes and North East Directors Tom and Mary Mann.
The
minutes were read from the Annual Board Meeting. The minutes were
accepted as read.
The Treasurers Report was read by the secretary, as sent
by Clayton & Gloria Brennan. A bill has been paid for annual
dues to the United Square Dancers of America for annual dues.
Complete report is attached. A motion was made by Ernie Walker
to accept the treasurers report as read. Second by Rose
Hall. Motion carried.
The Historian Report was read by the secretary, as sent by Tammie Hughes. Tammie has not received the historian books but is anxious to get started. Full report attached.
The Insurance Report was given by Ruth Michaelson. She has been working with the National Insurance Chair to get things set up and started since there were no records passed on to her. So far she has received insurance payments from 2 clubs. Full report attached.
The Prairie Squares Report was given by Ray Hall as nothing new to report.
The Directors Reports were given by each of the district directors present. Tom & Mary Mann sent in the report for the NE District. See attached.
The 2007 Convention Report was given by Bernadette McNeil. The Fargo Moorhead clubs will be hosting the 55th convention at Moorhead High School. This change was made because Shanley High School staff would not sign a contract before January of 2007, which was too late. The theme is Fargos Heaven in 2007 and the colors are blue and silver. There will be 2 gyms for main and plus dancing and the commons area will be used for clogging.
The 2008 Convention is still open for bids. None were received at this time. Contact your area clubs for a potential location and host clubs.
Old
Business:
Bernadette McNeil gave a report on the USDA meeting at the National
Convention. Approval was given for competition square dancing
for youth. The USDA credit card program was dropped as of July
31st.
New
Business:
USDA Credit Card Program & Membership List: Carol Currie reported
that since the United Square Dancers of America (USDA) credit
card program was dropped, the USDA is asking club members to help
start with a new provider. The previous provider canceled due
to low numbers of card holders. Carol read the correspondence
received from USDA. They would like clubs to submit a mailing
list of members by the first of January. These lists will only
be used to obtain a replacement Credit Card Marketing Program.
The privacy of members will be maintained and the lists will not
be sold or used for any other purpose. It was recommended we decide
at the state level as a board if we want to support it for the
entire state. Rose Hall made a motion that the clubs submit a
mailing list of names to show as support of the program. It will
still be up to each individual if they desire to be a part of
the program or to apply for a card. Carlyle Hillstrom second the
motion. Motion carried.
The district directors should get a list of names and addresses from each of the clubs in their district and submit the names to Marge Swanson, secretary to send in to the USDA. The names should be sent in by the first of January.
National Square Dance Directory Listing: Bernadette McNeil reported that the National Square Dance Directory listing is no longer published in print form and will only be available on the web. The web site is www.NSDDirectory.com. Club information can be submitted for free but it costs $20.00 per year to list festivals, conventions and/or special dances or a lifetime subscription can be purchased for $40.00. Rose Hall made a motion to pay the $40.00 lifetime subscription and have the webmaster, Ray Hall, be in charge of submitting the information to be listed. Anyone wanting listings submitted should submit the information to Ray Hall. Lois Weltz second the motion. Motion carried.
There was discussion on future conventions. A suggestion was given that conventions could be held in a central location. Jamestown was suggested as a good location centrally and also because their facilities are reasonably priced. It could be rotated by district as to who would host the convention and the clubs in the district could work together. It would be up to the district to decide to use a central location or have their own. Possible guidelines could be set up by the board for what is needed, such as halls, callers, stage, equipment, etc. The discussion was tabled for now and everyone should take it back to the clubs to see what can be done. We are still in need of a host and location for the 2008 convention.

Larry is giving Mainstream lessons every Tuesday evening at Capitol Electric. The Plus Club is having lessons on the 4th Monday of every month at Capitol Electric.

Jamestown Square Steppers This club dances are held the 1st Friday of each month at 7:30 PM and every 3rd Sunday at 2:00 PM September through May except no dances the month of January. They average about 2 to 3 squares per dance and dances are held at the Senior Citizens Center #1 in Jamestown. They also help the Salvation Army bells ringers in December.
Dakota RamblersThe Ramblers are a camping group of 46 members with 5 camp outs May through September with one camp in held at the Chieftain Inn in Carrington in January. They have their campouts every 3rd weekend of the month in various places in ND. The Ramblers hosted the ND State Square and Round dance convention April 28 & 29th 2006 held at the Jamestown Civic Center.
The Circle 8 Plus Club of Fargo/Moorhead dances on the first, third and 5th Saturdays of the months from September through May at the Mapleton School in Mapleton, ND. All of our members from last year have rejoined the club this fall. We average 1 or 2 squares at our dances, and invite all plus dancers to join us. We have a variety of callers scheduled for the remainder of the dance season. We are one of the clubs hosting the 2007 ND convention and invite everyone to join us there in April.
Saturday Fun Nite Fargo This club dances at the F.M. Labor Temple, 3002 1st Ave North in Fargo on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month May throught September. They have lost some of their 35 members they had last October and a few teenagers. However this club does have classes with 8 teenagers, 4 on Tuesday evening with Roger McNeil instructor and 4 on Thursday evening with Jim Lizakowski instructor. These classes are held at the Cash Wise Community Center. They also got 3 new members since the April report. They did demonstration dances this summer at Herbergers (2 day event), Barnesville County Fair, and the Sons of Norway. In September they sponsored a dance with Jerry Junck.
Prairie Promenaders-FargoThe Prairie Promenaders have been in existence since 1983. Jim and Dorothy Sanders are the current president and have been since 1985. They themselves have been square dancing since 1984. The club currently has 22 members. We dance every first and third Friday of the month. We dance throughtout the school year (September through May). We dance at the Madison Community Center at 1040 N 29th Street in Fargo.

Prairie Partners Devils Lake have 10 couples in their club. They had 15 club dances on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays including special dances, a Christmas Dance with Ted Kernoski calling, Fall Festival with Larry Pfennig and a New Years Eve Dance with Jim Lizakowski. Other callers this year were Ernest Rethemeier, Jim Jirak, Cliff March, Elgin Coyle, Roger McNeil, Larry Johansen and Mel Diers.
Border Belles and Beaus-Langdonheld 8 dances and most of these have been with no more than 4 squares. Elgin Coyle is the main caller and they try to get a variety of guest callers to supplement and keep the interest up. Many of the club members leave for the sunny south during the winter and theyve had to resort to only one dance per month to keep their dancing shoes limbered up. One night they only served lunch as only 7 people were in attendance. As they look forward to another year they find themselves handicapped as officers are hard to come by for the club. The schedule has been neglected as the new officers help to make the new schedule. They try to keep the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month for dance nights, but January, February, and March they only danced on the 3rd Monday. The next dance will be May 1, with Mel Diers calling.
